The front end of the traditional integrated amplifier is its pre amplifier, while the part that powers the speakers is the power amplifier. In higher-end systems these are often two separate devices. You use the pre amplifier to select from different inputs, and in some models control different aspects of how the sound is presented, for example with tone controls. All pre amplifiers have analogue audio inputs, mostly in the form of RCA connections, but some models also offer higher quality balanced XLR connections. XLR connections can allow lower noise transmission of the signal to the power amplifier. Some also include digital audio inputs, network connections and Bluetooth support.
One advantage of an pre amplifier is that you can upgrade your system by upgrading the power amplifier, while keeping your pre amplifier.
One pre amplifier variant is the “passive” pre amp. These don’t amplifier the signal at all. They just let you select between sources and attenuate the level using the volume control. Accordingly, they don’t need power.
At Addicted To Audio we carry an exciting range of superb pre-amplifiers from some of the finest specialist brands in the world, such as Bryston, Burson Audio, MOON by Simaudio, Naim Audio, Peachtree Audio, Mytek, Topping, Violectric, Schiit Audio and Octave. You may not be familiar with some of those brands, but they’ve got a quality experience in store for your ears.
There are two great ways to buy a pre amplifier. The best way for most people is at a quality retail outlet in your city. That way you can have a listen, try some out, see which of them feel like a good “fit” for you. Retailers are particularly good at helping you ensure that your purchase is fully compatible with the rest of your equipment. But if you’re confident that you already know what you want, consider purchasing your pre amplifier direct from us at Addicted To Audio. We are an authorised New Zealand reseller for all our products. We provide full service and after sales support. And we ship fast.
